The reform, currently being drafted by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Security, is inspired by international best practices and will address several critical aspects, including the expulsion of foreign nationals with criminal records, the streamlining of deportation procedures, and the elimination of loopholes exploited by transnational criminal networks.

Among the key components of the proposal is the reinstatement of Decree 70/2017, a policy introduced during the Macri administration that significantly accelerated the expulsion of foreigners involved in criminal activities. That decree was later repealed by the Fernández government, a move heavily criticized for weakening Argentina’s immigration controls.

The new reform will also seek to establish clear guidelines for legal immigration, promoting the integration of law-abiding immigrants while closing the door to those who seek to take advantage of the system.
