Following La Libertad Avanza’s (LLA) significant win in the Buenos Aires City legislative elections, President Javier Milei intensified his criticism of former President Mauricio Macri, signaling a deepening rift between the two leaders.

In a recent interview, Milei remarked, “I understand that for some things he’s too old and doesn’t get them, and his space doesn’t seem to understand them either,” addressing the PRO party’s allegations regarding AI-generated fake videos that circulated during the campaign. He further criticized Macri’s economic understanding and labeled Silvia Lospennato, the PRO candidate who finished third in the city elections, as a “terrible candidate.”

Milei also indicated that electoral negotiations in Buenos Aires Province are progressing without Macri’s involvement, stating, “That’s moving forward regardless of Macri. Or do they ignore the photos with my sister, ‘Lule’ Menem, Cristian Ritondo, ‘Colo’ Santilli, and José Luis Espert? Maybe Macri needs to understand that his time has passed.”

He emphasized that LLA is open to collaborating with center-right leaders willing to embrace libertarian ideals, regardless of their affiliation with PRO.

The tension between Milei and Macri has been escalating, particularly after Macri condemned the AI-generated videos as a “digital fraud attempt,” to which Milei retorted by calling Macri “a crybaby” and “very fragile.”

Political analyst Jaime Durán Barba attributed PRO’s poor performance in the Buenos Aires elections to Macri’s leadership, stating that Macri “completely erred since the 2023 defeat and has managed to end up alone.” He noted that many former allies have distanced themselves from Macri, aligning instead with LLA.

As LLA continues to gain momentum, Milei’s assertive stance suggests a strategic move to consolidate power and redefine Argentina’s political landscape, potentially sidelining traditional parties like PRO.
