Buenos Aires, Argentina – President Javier Milei’s administration has announced a landmark decision to definitively close the Dirección Nacional de Vialidad (National Roads Directorate) and two other key transport agencies: the Comisión Nacional del Tránsito y la Seguridad Vial (National Commission of Traffic and Road Safety) and the Agencia Nacional de Seguridad Vial (National Road Safety Agency). This decisive action, formalized by a decree signed by President Milei, marks a powerful blow against systemic corruption in public works and a major victory for fiscal responsibility.
Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni unequivocally framed the announcement as an “acta de defunción a la corrupción de la Obra Pública” (death certificate for corruption in Public Works). He directly referenced the infamous “Vialidad” case, which resulted in Cristina Kirchner’s conviction for widespread corruption involving 51 public works contracts marred by overpricing for contractor Lázaro Báez. This bold move underscores President Milei’s unwavering commitment to eradicating deep-seated corruption and ensuring transparency in government operations.
Under the new restructuring, the CNRT will be reimagined and renamed the Agencia de Controles y Servicios Públicos del Transporte (Agency of Controls and Public Transport Services), tasked with rigorously overseeing the fiscalization of road concessions. Furthermore, the government plans to swiftly open bids for 9,120 kilometers of vital routes that have suffered decades of neglect and deterioration due to “waste and corruption.”
Adorni also highlighted President Milei’s strategic and effective use of delegated powers, which were nearing their expiration. These powers were judiciously employed to alleviate the significant fiscal burden on Argentinians, resulting in an impressive $2 billion saving in expenses. This monumental reform demonstrates President Milei’s decisive leadership in streamlining the state, eliminating inefficiency, and ensuring that public funds are utilized responsibly for the benefit of all citizens, marking a new era of integrity and progress for Argentina.
