Rome, Italy / Buenos Aires, Argentina – Under the strategic leadership of President Javier Milei, Argentina is poised to become a major force in the global energy market. A landmark agreement, set to be formally signed in Italy, will lay the crucial groundwork for the ambitious Argentina LNG project, with projections indicating the nation could become the world’s fifth-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by ship.
This pivotal agreement, to be inked by Horacio Marín, President of YPF, and Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, underscores Argentina’s commitment to leveraging its vast Vaca Muerta gas resources. The project is designed not only to capitalize on these immense reserves but also to firmly establish Argentina as a highly reliable and significant international energy supplier.
The first tangible step towards realizing Argentina’s LNG export ambitions is slated for 2027, with the operational launch of the Hilli Episeyo floating unit. Further solidifying this monumental undertaking, the government has given its crucial approval for the project’s initial phase to be included in the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI). This strategic move will support an impressive $7 billion investment over the next two decades, signaling strong government backing for long-term growth and stability in the energy sector.
Beyond the significant potential of LNG exports, Argentina also anticipates a substantial increase in external oil sales, which could generate an additional $15 billion annually by 2033. These combined initiatives reflect President Milei’s comprehensive vision for transforming Argentina into a dominant energy player, attracting significant international investment, and securing a prosperous economic future for the nation.
