In March, President Javier Milei once again ranked as the politician with the highest approval rating in Argentina, according to a nationwide survey conducted by consulting firm Opina Argentina, based on over 2,000 cases.
From a list of 10 political figures, including Victoria Villarruel, Mauricio Macri, Juan Grabois, Cristina Kirchner, and Martín Llaryora, Milei maintained the highest positive image at 48%. However, his approval dropped by 6 points compared to the previous survey, while his negative perception increased by 7 points.
The Opina Argentina report highlights that Milei’s decline is part of a broader drop in approval ratings among key government officials. Patricia Bullrich (-6.47%), Victoria Villarruel (-1.45%), and Economy Minister Luis “Toto” Caputo (-6.44%) all saw their approval ratings decline. In each case, negative perceptions grew, with Caputo experiencing the biggest hit—an 8-point increase in disapproval, reaching a 53% negative rating, the worst among government figures.
For the first time since November, Milei’s negative image (52%) exceeds his positive one (48%). His ratings break down as follows: 32% “very positive”, 16% “somewhat positive”, 47% “somewhat negative”, and 5% “very negative”.
Public Perception of Argentina’s Situation and Milei’s Government
The survey also measured public perception of the country’s current state. 47% of respondents believe Argentina is in a better position than last year, while 46% say it is worse. Looking ahead, 45% think the country will improve within a year, whereas 44% believe it will deteriorate.
Regarding support for Milei’s government, 41% identify as pro-government, while 39% consider themselves opposition, and 19% remain neutral. Milei’s approval has declined steadily since December, when it stood at 45%, while opposition has slightly increased from 37% to 39%.
Among younger voters, 50% identify as pro-government, according to Opina Argentina.
Reactions to Milei’s Legislative Opening Speech
The Legislative Opening Speech on March 1st was met with mixed reactions from the public. 49% disapproved of Milei’s speech, while 38% viewed it positively.
When asked about the opposition’s decision to boycott the event, 56% of respondents disapproved, while 35% supported the move.
Voting Intentions for the Legislative Elections
Looking ahead to the legislative elections, La Libertad Avanza leads voting intentions with 38%, followed by the Peronism of Cristina Kirchner and Axel Kicillof at 32%. Mauricio Macri’s PRO trails at 7%, while other political groups each poll below 5%. Additionally, 7% of respondents remain undecided.
Conclusion
According to Opina Argentina, the crypto scandal has negatively impacted Milei’s approval ratings and generated greater political uncertainty, weakening public perception of the country’s present and future. However, optimism remains dominant, and despite his rising disapproval, Milei continues to be the politician with the highest approval rating in Argentina.
Furthermore, some dissatisfaction is emerging among Macri supporters: among those who voted for Patricia Bullrich in 2023, 57% approve of Milei’s speech, while 20% disapprove.
