President Javier Milei has strongly criticized the Argentine Senate’s decision to reject the ‘Ficha Limpia’ law, which aimed to prevent individuals with confirmed corruption convictions from running for public office. The bill, already approved by the Chamber of Deputies, failed in the Senate by a single vote, with 36 in favor and 35 against, falling short of the required 37 votes for passage.
Expressing his disapproval on social media, President Milei succinctly labeled the outcome as “Lamentable. Fin.” His office further elaborated, stating that the President “abhors the attitude of national senators who have chosen to prioritize their personal and partisan interests over the demands of the people they claim to represent.”
The statement continued, accusing the Kirchnerist faction of doing “whatever is necessary to defend the impunity of their leaders,” and described the Senate as “once again consolidating itself as the refuge of the Argentine political caste.”
The rejection of the ‘Ficha Limpia’ law has sparked controversy, with allegations of political maneuvering and shifting alliances. Notably, two senators from Misiones, Carlos Arce and Sonia Rojas Decut, who were expected to support the bill, voted against it, contributing to its failure.
This development underscores the challenges President Milei faces in advancing his anti-corruption agenda and highlights the complexities of Argentine legislative politics.
