Buenos Aires, Argentina – In a powerful demonstration of its commitment to economic liberalization, the government of President Javier Milei has expanded its “Open Skies” policy with the addition of El Salvador. This landmark agreement marks the 27th such pact signed since the start of the Milei administration, rapidly transforming Argentina’s aviation sector and strengthening its ties with the global community.
The new understanding, formalized by the Argentine Secretary of Transportation and El Salvador’s Director of Civil Aviation, establishes unlimited frequencies for both passenger and cargo flights. It also allows for strategic code-sharing agreements with third-party airlines and includes crucial technical cooperation on operational safety. This initiative, rooted in a mid-2024 Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU), repeals a restrictive 1971 law that had previously limited flights to national carriers and granted a monopoly to Aerolíneas Argentinas.
According to the Secretariat of Transportation, this policy has already led to the creation of 38 new international connections, fostering a more competitive market and providing consumers with a wider range of routes. The influx of foreign companies operating in Argentina under these reciprocity agreements is not only boosting tourism and attracting investment but also modernizing the country’s airspace. With strategic partners like Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Germany already on board, Argentina is firmly positioning itself as a key hub for global air travel.
